Back to the Future via Randi Rhodes

Some things never change. Conservatives are, once again, trying to debunk the science on climate change. And as usual, their debunking consists entirely of bunk. Charles Krauthammer said about climate change this week "I'm not impressed by numbers. I'm not impressed by consensus." Then what are you impressed by, Chuck? My guess is oil company money. Numbers? Consensus? Those don't impress him much. In all honesty, the only things that really impress Charles Krauthammer are his own pre-existing opinions - even if they don't always come from his brain.

Climate change denial isn't the only subject from the crazy way-back machine the Republicans have resurrected.

Right-wing media is also now in a tizzy over Monica Lewinsky, once again. Now they're floating the theory that the Clintons are behind Monica Lewinsky's new essay in Vanity Fair. Hello? If the Clintons had any control over what Monica did or didn't do, wouldn't they have had her burn the damned dress? Right-wing media thinks that the Clintons were behind the Monica article to generate sympathy for Hillary, because the Clintons want people talking about this - AT THE SAME TIME, the right-wing media is insisting the Clintons DON'T want people talking about this. Brilliant. #headdesk

Lynne Cheney said the article about Monica is a "strategy or tactic" so people will say "it is old news." Ummmm, it IS old news, Lynne. It happened in the 90's - nobody needs a "strategy" to label something "old news" when it actually happened in the previous millennium! How old is the Monica story? It's older than Benghazi — and that's the oldest story this side of the Epic of Gilgamesh!

Speaking of old ideas, Republican Thom Tillis - who won last night's GOP Senate primary in North Carolina - seems to want to bring back the idea of throwing the old & frail out on the curb - which we stopped doing during the Depression, thanks to FDR and the Democrats. Tillis says that we need to "divide and conquer the people who are on assistance." Thom, we're supposed to conquer poverty, not conquer the poor. I gotta give it to the Republicans on this: at least they pick fights they can win. Democrats try to conquer things like poverty, injustice, or climate change. Republicans just want to kick the ass of poor people. Hey, it's achievable for them, right?

It's all really simple: Republicans are old, angry, and tired. If you give them the levers of power, they'll do what angry old people do. If you stand up to them, however? If you go VOTE - EVERY TIME - you'll set them back. They'll have to re-start their propaganda, they'll have to regroup, and they'll have to re-think - and they're not good at any of those.

But you MUST remain positive. You've gotta VOTE. And you MUST stay engaged. It's going to take time. But things still CAN change for the better. But it's up to you.

How to do your Homework & Double Check the News

With the end of 'The Randi Rhodes Show', many of Randi's listeners have been expressing deep concern about where they're going to find an information resource quite as effective as her legendary homework page.

Thankfully, Randi's staff decided to take on that challenge recently, so her Assistant Producer, Shawn "Smith" Peirce joined guest host Nicole Sandler for a seven step walk-through on how Randi's listeners, Nicole's listeners, or really anyone can compile information in the way that Randi's staff has done it for over a decade.

Listen to the full explanation by Shawn with Nicole, cross-posted from RadioOrNot.com (where this post will continue existing after RandiRhodes.com is shut down), and follow along with the steps below.

 http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/2822848#.U2q7bcBNQJs.

Step 1: Gather Your Raw Materials

Doing what Randi and her staff have always done isn't nearly as complicated as some people might think. But it does take dedication, and a commitment to excellence…along with a few simple tools.

Tool #1: Time. You'll need to commit to setting aside at least one hour, on each day you want to be informed. Think of all the crap TV you or someone you know already watches, or all the time you waste each day on silly games like Candy Crush. If being a well-informed, well-educated American citizen is something you claim is important to you, carving out an hour from your day shouldn't be much for you to prove those claims.

There's are also a few keys to managing your time. If you hold yourself to a time limit, and you skim the stories first, before you take the time to deeply read them, you'll likely find it significantly easier to keep yourself on track. Also, Randi and her team find a place you can read, away from distractions.

Tool #2: A computer with internet access. We realize there are some listeners to radio programs these days who have limited internet access. Some individuals may even have to go to the library every few days to download the podcasts of their favorite online radio programs. But there are estimated to be more than 120,000 libraries in the U.S. today - the overwhelming majority of which have free internet access, available to any patron who wishes to use it. Sometimes, users may have to pay a small fee - a concept we'll hit on more than once in the course of this lesson.

It's also recommended that you use online apps like Readability, Pocket, or Evernote, or you may just want to save your links in your browser, using a service like Apple's iCloud or Google Bookmarks. That way, you can keep your links organized across your computer and mobile devices like your cell phone or tablet.

Step 2: Start With The News

Randi Rhodes has always said that she'd prefer everyone read a newspaper everyday. Admittedly, some newspapers are better than others - and some news sources online are also better than others. Still, if you're going to try to sift through the news of the day, you should probably start with an actual news source or two. For the record, Fox 'News' on TV doesn't count as a legitimate news source.

Below is a list of legitimate news sources that Randi and her staff have found generally reliable through the years. Yes, many of these websites do require subscriptions if people want to read more than a handful of articles. If the content is worth using, and worth reading? It's worth paying a little for it too.
The New York Times McClatchyDC The Washington Post
The Wall Street Journal Reuters L.A. Times
Al Jazeera America BBC News Bloomberg News
These are the kinds of sources you should began your day with - though you might want to stay away from the opinions sections. You're looking for NEWS first. Informed opinions and commentaries will come later. For now, if you see an interesting story, save the link to the story, and move on.

Step 3: The Aggregators

These are the sites that already sift through some of the news for you, and gather it together - or aggregate it - for you. Some of the aggregators like Huffpost Hill or Politico's Playbook will even send you daily e-mails of their aggregation. These sites also include some newer organizations, staffed by proven journalists like Ezra Klein or Nate Silver, that are focal points for what's being called "data journalism" - the concept of using stacks of facts to lead you to a conclusion. In the old days, that kind of thing used to just be called "journalism." By the way - that's why we don't include 'The Drudge Report' in this list: Because propaganda isn't journalism.
The Plum Line Blog Wonkblog at The Washington Post;
HuffPost Hill Politico Playbook
Step 4: Check The Writers, Journalists, And Trusted Commentary Websites

By this point, you should likely have begun to get an idea of what the major stories of the day are. Remember - you've been saving the links you've been finding, so far. You'll organize them soon.

For now, you want to check the best writers, journalists, and informed commentary websites to see what they're saying, and if they notice something you might have missed. The below list is by no means a comprehensive list - but it is a good start.
Trusted Writers & Journalists
Robert Reich Joan Walsh Michael Tomasky
Greg Sargent Ezra Klein Sarah Kliff
Brian Beutler David Cay Johnston Amanda Terkel
Julia Ioffe John Nichols Joshua Holland
Irin Carmon Ta-Nehsi Coates Paul Krugman
Paul Waldman Josh Rogin Rachel Maddow
Eleanor Clift Nate Silver Ed Kilgore
Jonathan Bernstein Steve Benen Michelle Cottle
You may notice that none of the above writers or journalists are linked. There's a reason for that. While each of these talented people has agreements with a primary media outlet, they all get published in an ever-growing array of publications. Wherever their work is, we highly recommend you take a look at it, if you have the time.

Of course, the media organizations that host these great journalists and writers are also usually among the best in the business - and Randi's staff tends to trust them as well. Like the above list, this one is in no way comprehensive - but it is another good start.
Trusted Sites
The New Republic Mother Jones The Nation
The Daily Beast The New Yorker Talking Points Memo
Washington Monthly Vox.com The American Prospect
FiveThirtyEight.com Foreign Policy Magazine Naked Capitalism
Think Progress  Media Matters  Politico

Step 5: SORT!

So now you have a pile of links, likely in several folders, in a somewhat disorganized way. Use whatever organizing tools you've chosen to allow you to see the headlines of the stories you've chosen so far, like in the image below.

Read through the list and start putting items together that make sense. Think of it like the old Sesame Street game of "Which of these things is not like the other?" Inevitably, you'll end up with several piles of stories that all have to deal with the same subject - and inevitably, you may have a few interesting links that don't seem connected to anything else.

Step 6: READING TIME!

Now comes the most important part. Pick one or two of the piles, and read through the stories on that subject. Start with the news, and move through the commentaries. By the time you get done, you'll be more informed on the topic than most Americans - and well-armed for the next idiot dittohead just spouting the latest talking points from some idiot they heard on the radio or cable TV.

You're not done yet though…

Step 7: Follow Through.

This is the hardest part for many people - talking about what you know, and ACTING on it, when you can.

Many people say, "I don't know anything about [the subject of the day]" as an excuse. The fact is, if you've taken even just a single hour to dig into the biggest topics of the day, you likely know enough to teach them what you know - simply, easily, directly. You're well-informed now, after following the above steps. That doesn't mean you're 100% right all the time - but it does mean you're likely more informed than the fool who just repeats the latest talking points they've heard on cable TV, the radio, or the internet. They likely don't understanding all of the facts, the important details, or how things are connected - things you now have a working familiarity with.
Talk about the subjects that interest you with your friends and your family. But also feel free to talk about them anywhere else. If you're standing in line at the grocery store, and some idiot is repeating the latest lies they heard on Fox, feel free to tell the truth! Yes - teen pregnancy rates are at historic lows in the U.S., and they've fallen by 51% for black teenagers in the last two decades. Yes, the unemployment rate in the U.S., as of April 2014, is the lowest it's been in 5½ years - and its finally almost back to where it was before the Great Bush Recession nearly destroyed the world's economies.

Part of the reason stupid has proliferated in our society is because of right-wing hate radio and outlets like Fox, that push lies 24/7/365. That kind of propaganda emboldens those who are ignorant and ill-informed or misinformed, and makes them feel like they can bully around anyone who disagrees with them.

If you are well-informed, and well-educated, you are also well-armed for an intellectual battle. Remember - they're likely intellectually unarmed and unprepared for a true battle of wits. They've got a lot of bluster, and the latest talking points from whatever paid propagandist they've been conned into thinking is a genius. But that's all they have.

You have the facts - and you have them from multiple different sources. You also have millions of Americans who agree with you - who are just waiting for someone to stand up.

So stand up for yourself, and stand up for the truth. Once the extremists realize they can't bully you, many of them will simply sit down, or go away. Some of them them though, may want to learn how you became so well informed.

So don't run away from them. Be better than they are.

Teach them. Each one, teach one. Just like Randi and those like her have been doing for years.

Then? GO OUT AND VOTE. Every election. Every time. Always. Vote. Vote. Vote. Vote when you're tired. Vote when you have to wait hours. Vote when you have to call in sick. If you are alive? Vote.

And while you're at it? Get involved in a local political organization. Go to your local city council meetings, and school board meetings. Get involved. Stay involved. Every day.

If you do that? The best days of America will still be ahead of us.

Or you can stay home. And whatever political hellscape or bogus impeachment, or ginned up war they want to send your kids or grandkids to get killed in - again? That'll be your fault for not showing up at the ballot box.

It's YOUR call. Because ultimately, YOU HAVE THE POWER.

If your vote wasn't so powerful, and so important?
Why would they try so hard to steal it from you?

American Meltdown via Randi Rhodes

I've often said America has a system of courts - but it no longer has a justice system. The Roberts' Supreme Court proved that again this week, when they ruled that you can have prayers to open municipal town government meetings - and by "you," they mean you Christians out there. Everyone else? Just shut up and deal with it.

In the case of Town of Greece v. Galloway, the Court ruled that it’s OK for a town in upstate New York to open their town board meetings with a highly sectarian prayer. And if you haven’t guessed, "highly sectarian" doesn’t include a lot of sects. Odd, you would think that a town called Greece would open its meetings with a prayer to the gods Zeus or Apollo… or the goddesses Athena or Venus.

In the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that the opening prayer was merely ceremonial. Yeah, well so is a human sacrifice, but that doesn’t make it right. Two townspeople sued over the prayers. Justice Kennedy wrote that the prayers "made them feel excluded and disrespected." But Kennedy dismissed their concerns, writing "Adults often encounter speech they find disagreeable." I have to agree on that one, Justice - that’s exactly how I feel about your poorly written opinion.

Meanwhile, the right-wing obsession with Benghazi just keeps getting stronger. That tells you one thing - Obamacare must be doing just great! And it is!

How bad is the right's insanity over Benghazi? On more than one occasion recently, Fox has actually cut away from presidential press briefings because nobody was talking about Benghazi. They’re actually getting frustrated that reality won’t conform itself to their delusions. Of course there’s no news about Benghazi, you morons! There is nothing new about Benghazi. Benghazi happened almost 20 months ago - in September of 2012. They might as well be looking for new information about the 2012 World Series. It’s actually fresher news than Benghazi is!

Meanwhile, the planet is in some serious trouble. The official National Climate Assessment was released today, and THAT is both truly scary AND it's news. Hey Fox - maybe you should hire some people to report that. Of course, that would mean putting together an actual news-reporting organization. Fox "News" doesn’t gather the news. At best, they cherry pick the news. At worst, they just lie about it.

Benghazi Buffoonery via Randi Rhodes

A lot happened while I was gone last week…unless you're a Republican pundit, in which case the only thing that ever happens is Benghazi. Now Republicans are claiming that they've found a "smoking gun" memo that links the White House to Benghazi - or more accurately, to the Republicans' own twisted version of what they think Benghazi is. Guys, this has all been gone over. At this point, you're more likely to find a literal, actual smoking gun on the grassy knoll at the site of the JFK assassination. How did everybody miss that for the last 50 years!

Republicans in the House are also calling for new hearings on Benghazi. Really? I wasn't aware those hacks had stopped any of the hearings they're currently holding. Face it, the only time the Republicans in Congress stop their hearings on Benghazi is when Darrell Issa has to use the rest room - and from the sour look on his face, that's not too often. There have been at least seven Congressional committees that have looked for wrongdoing over Benghazi already. SEVEN. If the Republicans had put that much effort into looking for anything else, they would have found it, and I'm including that Malaysian plane, Bigfoot, and a cure for cancer.

On Fox "News" this weekend, Brit Hume got visibly agitated when Democratic Congresswoman Jane Harman mocked conservative obsessions with Benghazi. Hey Fox - if the truth upsets you so much, then don't have people who actually know the truth on your shows. Really, when you have people from the real world on Fox News, it just breaks up the fictional narrative that Fox works so hard to create. It would be like if the Star Wars movies were periodically interrupted by George Lucas appearing on screen and saying "You guys realize that this is all just made up, right? Chewbacca is just an actor in a costume."

Meanwhile, Cliven Bundy's supporters are still hunkered down in Bunkerville, in the Nevada desert. The ranch and the area around it are full of gun crazies who drove from all over the country to take part in this circus. If the FBI has any kind of sense, they'll document all of them - it's literally a self-selecting group of the most dangerous domestic terrorists in the country. I don't know where the next Timothy McVeigh is coming from, but odds are good that he's on the Bundy ranch right now.

Studies correlate low IQ with rabidly racist and right-wing views

Does talking to a Teabully leave you asking: What’s wrong with this person? Do Teabully posts and memes make you wonder if people, who believe those things, could be cray-cray?   Take heart! A 2012 Canadian study suggests conservatives with racist and extreme views just might be born that way.

Psychology Today featured psychologists Gordon Hodson and Michael A. Busseri’s findings in its April 22 issue. Hodson and Busseri work at Borck University in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada. They concluded the following:
Lower intelligence in childhood  is predictive of greater racism in adulthood, with this effect being mediated (partially explained) through conservative ideology.
and
Poor abstract reasoning skills were related to homophobic attitudes which was mediated through authoritarianism and low levels of intergroup contact.
and
For those who lack a cognitive ability to grasp complexities of our world, strict-right wing ideologies may be more appealing.” and “people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies.

According to University of Virginia psychologist Brian Nosek:
Reality is complicated and messy…Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies.
And the studies making the connections to low IQ and to the racists and far right wing views–that seem to be at the root of the views expressed by the GOP/Teabully party of today–go back to 1970 and to 1958. Psychological studies have also linked a Conservative political point of view to an authoritarian upbringing.

Psychological studies have longed linked the appeal to political points of view, such as Fascism, to an authoritarian upbringing.  For a refresher course on “Isms,” grab the free downloadable primer available at LiberalAmerica.org.

The current rise of the Christian Right embedding itself into the present GOP/Teabully Party is proof that there’s a link between authoritarianism and these political points of view. The “Christian Fundamentalist Nation,” of which Teabullies dream, has been referred to as an ideology that is:
A form of debilitating shortsightedness. It replaces reality with an idealized version that usually has too little to do with the real world to be workable.
We should be careful not to conclude all liberals are smart and all right-wing conservative/Teabully types are stupid.  And, we must also be careful not take IQ tests at face value. They’ve long been suspected of being culturally biased. But, the studies connecting low IQs to racist, homophobic, bigoted, and conservative thinking are there.

Conservative Teabully types will no doubt scream and stomp, yelling, “Liberal bias!” That, of course, wouldn’t be surprising. They deny facts and have very little interest in science. But, like the Affordable Care Act and other legislation about which John Boehner’s GOP/Teabully House of Representatives whines, why bother?  It’s too hard, and reading is for Liberals
