Randi Rhodes: Tea vs GOP

Well, yesterday’s deadline on getting a budget agreement came and went. Let’s see if Democrats are as adept at moving the deadline back as John Boehner is at moving the goal posts for what constitutes an agreement. Republicans are putting more concentrated effort into shutting down the federal government than the Japanese utility company is putting in to shutting down the leaking nuclear reactor.

People all over the planet are dealing with things like earthquakes, tsunamis, rebellions, and wars, with their governments still operating. During the War of 1812 the British came here and burned down Washington, DC and the White House… and the government continued to operate. Now you’re telling me that we have to shut down just because John Boehner is an ass?

Boehner reportedly warned House Republicans that the Democrats would “win” in any government shutdown. The very fact that John Boehner thinks there could be any winners in a government shutdown shows how little he understands the situation. John Boehner clearly remembers what happened 15 years ago when Newt Gingrich shut down the government. Well, that tells you one thing—alcohol abuse doesn’t affect long-term memory.

Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, released his budget plan for 2012 on the same day as the talks to finish the 2011 budget were falling apart. Under Ryan’s plan, Medicare would be replaced with a system to provide price supports for the elderly to buy private insurance. You think you have problems getting health insurance now? Give it a try when you’re 80 years old! Good luck to anybody who walks into an insurance company’s office using a cane or a walker! Honestly, Ryan’s plan would send anyone who managed to live to be 110 years old out onto the private market to buy insurance. Now, there’s a real incentive against longevity! I see the genius of Ryan’s plan now. Old people will die off a lot faster without Medicare, leading to big, big savings on Social Security!

I guess there is one good thing about a total government shutdown—it will give you a good idea what the world would be like if America adopts Paul Ryan’s budget plan.
