Randi Rhodes: More Hostage Taking

Developing: President Obama has requested a joint session of Congress next Wednesday (9/7) night for his major jobs speech - the next GOP primary debate will be held at the same time (ha!).

The White House has accused Congressional Republicans of holding disaster relief hostage to their demands for steep budget cuts. What clued them off? The ransom demand? Really, Congressional Republicans might as well just have stated their position using words cut out from magazines like an old-fashioned kidnapper’s note. “America! Send us one billion dollars in budget cuts in a plain brown envelope, or you will never see rural Vermont or parts of upstate New York again.” It’s hard to come up with an analogy more absurd than the reality here. If the Republicans were blocking funding for anything else, we’d be saying “What next? Are they going to block funding for disaster relief?”

Nowadays conservatives want to destroy FEMA by denying it funding. But remember back when Bush was president, they could try to destroy it by putting a moron in charge of it? Yes, George Bush’s former FEMA director, Michael Brown, has weighed in with his opinion on aid for Hurricane Irene victims, four days after the storm hit. Hey, that’s a lot faster than he reacted to Hurricane Katrina! Michael Brown was on Fox News, supporting hostage-taker Eric Cantor’s position that we shouldn’t give aid to disaster victims until we make matching budget cuts. That approach would certainly have made Michael Brown’s job easier during Katrina. He could have blamed his incompetence on Congress’s intransigence. Why is this guy on TV? Every time I see Michael Brown’s face on the screen, my first thought is “My God, has there been some sort of emergency involving Arabian horses?” Of course Fox News has Brown on as an expert in disaster relief. He’s the world’s worst failure in disaster relief! It’s like having Christine O’Donnell on as an expert on how to win an election. They say those who can’t do, teach. Those who do really, really poorly end up being experts on the subject at Fox News.

An interesting point came up in Dick Cheney’s interview with Sean Hannity—due to all the hardware inside of his chest taking the place of an actual heart, Dick Cheney does not have a pulse. Wow. Now I’m even more creeped out by Cheney. The only way Dick Cheney could be any creepier is if he had Paul Ryan’s hair.

Connecticut's Gov. Dannel Malloy summed up Ron Paul's war on FEMA with five simple words: "I think he's an idiot."

Thom Hartmann: Republicans - Read the Constitution!

Thom plus logo

Republican Congressman from Ohio Steve Chabot doesn't know jack about the Constitution. Last week - the Congressman - fearing that tough questions asked of him may end up on YouTube - banned constituents from having cameras at his town hall meeting - even employing the police to confiscate recording devices from attendees. Now - the first circuit U.S Court of Appeals has ruled that citizens have a right to film government officials conducting official business.

The court's opinion reads, "Gathering information about government officials in a form that can readily be disseminated to others serves a cardinal First Amendment interest in protecting and promoting "the free discussion of governmental affairs...Freedom of expression has particular significance with respect to government."

Yet another case of Republicans having no understanding whatsoever of the United States constitution.

Randi Rhodes: He`s Baaaack!

Darth Cheney has once again emerged from the shadows and this time he’s just figuratively shooting his friends in the face. In his new memoir, Cheney is trying to rewrite history. Good God, can’t this man be satisfied with having already screwed up history itself?

Irene has passed. But the aftermath of Irene could be even worse. And by the “aftermath of Irene,” I mean Eric Cantor. Cantor is saying that there will be no disaster relief without budget cuts. What exactly is Eric Cantor’s function? To say the things that John Boehner is actually ashamed to say? Cantor is literally trying to use the flooding as a way to take people’s Medicare and Social Security away. He’s worse than people who go out looting after a disaster. He claims we should operate like “any family when it is struck with disaster.” I don’t know about your family, Eric, but in mine we don’t use the disaster to strong-arm other family members. If Eric Cantor’s home was on fire, would he refuse to let the firefighters extinguish the blaze until they had agreed to give their pensions and health insurance? It’s going to take a while for the floodwaters to recede. Don’t even bother waiting for Republican intransigence on flood relief to recede.

Of course, Rush Limbaugh also weighed in on Hurricane Irene, which makes sense—one blowhard talking about another. Rush said that “Obama was hoping that [Hurricane Irene] was going to be a disaster” so that Obama would have “another excuse” for the economy. First of all, Hurricane Irene IS a disaster. But then Rush doesn’t count bad things in blue states like Vermont as disasters.

Turning to unnatural disasters, now Michele Bachmann claims that her comments that the hurricane and earthquake were messages from God were just a joke. Michele said “I have a great sense of humor.” Michele, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a great sense of humor, just because people laugh at everything you say. And if a deadly hurricane is still in the process of killing people, it may be a little too soon to use it as a joke premiss. Here’s a little factoid for you, Michele: if you have to tell people that you have a great sense of humor... chances are that you don’t have a great sense of humor. Besides, Michele, if you want to be funny, you need to have a straight man. You don’t even have a straight man for a husband.

Thom Hartmann: At least one Republican has Gotten the Message

Thom plus logo

At least one Republican has gotten the message. Senator John Thune from South Dakota told a local newspaper that if he's learned one thing during this August recess holding town hall meetings with constituents - it's don't cut Medicare and Social Security. Thune told the paper that that message is one that he'll be taking back to Washington, DC. Of course - the rest of the Republican Party still doesn't get it.

That's because they're either not holding ANY town hall meetings, or they're holding private, corporate-funded town halls that charge constituents 40 bucks to ask a question, or they're busy keeping "watch lists" to intimidate their constituents from asking tough questions.

Either way - John Thune seems to be the only Republican who's actually doing his job - and listening to the American people who are in lock-step opposition to the Republican's radical agenda.

Randi Rhodes: War on FEMA

It seems Hurricane Irene has passed—there is extensive damage, and it’s going to take a long time to repair all of it, but it could have been much worse... kind of like the Bush presidency. In New York City, Hurricane Irene did very little damage. In fact, it forced the cancellation of three performances of Broadway’s “Spiderman: Turn off the Dark,” which is considered something of a plus.

A lot of people have a problem with how the government provides disaster relief. Ron Paul, however, has a problem with the very fact that the government provides disaster relief at all. What is Ron Paul’s model for disaster relief? He says “We should be like 1900.” Wow. And I thought conservatives just looked back to 1900 for their model of what civil rights should look like. Hey, if we did things like we did back in 1900, we wouldn’t have to worry about restoring electricity to all those homes without power. Back in 1900, most homes didn’t have electricity.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told people who were still on the beach as the storm was approaching “Get the hell off the beach.” Funny, “get the hell off the beach” is exactly what Chris Christie would hear, if he ever went down there and removed his shirt. But if Chris Christie was on the beach, concerned beachgoers would be trying to push him back into the ocean. Give people a little time to evacuate, Governor Christie. Remember, not everybody has a taxpayer-supplied helicopter to take them wherever they need to go.

Michele Bachmann is saying that Hurricane Irene and last week’s Virginia earthquake were wake-up calls from God. The earthquake was 5.8 on the Richter scale, or roughly what you get when you drop a bowling ball. If that was a wake-up call from God, it wasn’t a very urgent one. Evidently God is trying to wake us up very gently. Michele said “I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’” This from a woman who doesn’t know her husband is gay! Michele, God gave us gaydar for a reason.

Thom Hartmann: A "For the Rich, By the Rich" Economy

Thom plus logo

There's more evidence of a widening wealth inequality gap in America thanks to 30-plus years of Reaganomics. According to The Atlantic magazine - two-thirds of all new income in America between 2002 and 2007 went to just the top 1% of Americans. That's 2 out of every 3 dollars in America being sucked up by the richest of the rich.

Not to mention - that the wealthiest 400 Americans - our nation's most senior oligarchs, who own more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans - have seen their incomes double over the last twelve years while their tax rates have been cut in half. Talk about a "for the rich, by the rich" economy. Wealth inequality in America is at levels not seen since the 1920's - and we're now a more unequal nation than the Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Kazakhstan according to data from the CIA Factbook.

So when the entire American middle class disappears, then can we all accept that Reagan's vision of America - and the direction that the current Republican Party has this nation headed - will lead us all toward ruin?

Thom Hartmann: Dick Cheney confirms he is a war criminal

Thom plus logo

Draft dodger Dick Cheney has a new book coming out. The man with no pulse is trying to set the record straight about his time in the White House as Vice President - and according to excerpts from the book entitled, "My Time" - which is set to be released next week - Cheney confirms what we all suspected - that he really is that evil. Cheney goes after former Secretary of State Colin Powell for opposing the Iraq War - then rips into Condoleezza Rice - calling her "naïve" for trying to negotiate with the North Koreans.

I guess Cheney would have preferred just bombing them. Cheney, who got five deferments from serving in Vietnam, even admits that back in 2007 - he urged President Bush to launch military strikes against a Syrian nuclear site. Luckily - no one else in the White House agreed with Cheney. Cheney then goes on to praise the use of torture - confirming that he is not only a war criminal - but also a proud war criminal. As for Cheney's thoughts on Bush - he praised him as a "strong and resolute" leader. Go figure.

I say as soon as the book hit shelves next Tuesday - it should immediately be entered into evidence in the war crimes trial against the Bush administration.

Don't Trust the Corporate Media

These are dark political times to be sure. The best way we can fight back is to support the most aggressive, effective progressive media we can muster.
I'm writing you, in the heat of August, with surprising earthquakes and hurricanes on the East Coast, and on the chance that you are reading your e-mails and AlterNet, and not on vacation -- though a vacation is a very good idea about this time.

We are in an agonizing, infuriating, depressing political crisis -- I don't have to tell you that. And here is what I'm supposed to tell you next -- how we get out of the crisis. But I can't. Because I don't know. And if anyone is telling you they know how we change this present crisis, they are full of it. I've been doing this work for more than 30 years. It hasn't ever been this bad.

We Must Do Something

But we must do something. Strengthening the progressive media is a good place to start. We absolutely need the most aggressive, effective media we can muster, and that goal is the theme of this letter to you. Can you help AlterNet fight tooth and nail to push back against the right-wing hostage takers?

Normally we wouldn't start our Fall campaign until after Labor Day, but frankly we couldn't wait. There is a crisis everywhere we turn -- the crashing global economy; the sky-high jobless rate; the mortgage crises, which is getting worse, not better; the denial of climate change; the broad attacks on unions -- teachers, even fire and police; the undermining of Social Security. I could go on. We have to answer back. And the best way is to have strong media on our side.

The Corporate Media Facilitates Taking the Nation Hostage

In the current crisis, as Paul Krugman writes, the right-wing "Republicans have taken the nation hostage." They have disrupted "the essential running of government," and "purposefully undermined the economy, to force concessions they could never get legislatively." And Congress is on vacation now, but we know there are plenty more shenanigans coming down the line.

But you know what? As Krugman reminds us, the corporate media is a big part of the problem. And it is not just Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and the right-wing media. It is also CNN, the Washington Post and the television networks. "When the mainstream media obsessively reports that both sides are to blame, no matter what the facts, there is no penalty for extremism." In fact it encourages it.

The radical conservatives pay no price for trying to wreck the economy with their lies, and their hostage taking. Why should they stop if they aren't challenged?

Fight the Propaganda Machine

So we have to challenge the right-wing and the corporate media. Every step of the way. They enable the right's machine in its goal to crush its opponents, and turn our country’s values back to the Ayn Rand fantasy days of psychopathic individualism. It is like a war for them. Their team must win at all costs. There is no reason, compromise, good sense. Well that is ridiculous. It's time we said enough.

So, we have to fight with all we have, and this isn't a short-term thing. We have to dig in for the long haul. Things aren't going to be turned around in two years or probably even four. The pendulum that many count on is not exactly swinging back, as we have moved to the right every year since Reagan was president, when compared to the 1970s. That has to end. Can you help?

Our Goal and the Plan

What is our goal? We aim to raise $52k in this campaign. We came up a little -- $2k -- short in the Spring, but we didn't want to hassle you with too many appeals; we know that can be annoying. We figured we would make it up now.

So what's the plan? First, a reminder. There is no easy way out. There is no short-term fix, no candy coating it. That is why I sat down at my computer in August. We can't wait, but we need to invest for the long haul.

Thom Hartmann: Not all Billionaires are Created Equal

Thom plus logo

Maybe we should take a tip from France. The French government just introduced a new debt reduction package that includes a 3% income tax increase on people making more than $720,000 a year. But no one is screaming about class warfare in France today - that's because it was the millionaires and billionaires themselves who asked for the tax increase. In an open letter - some of the wealthiest people in France wrote, "We, the presidents and leaders of industry, businessmen and women, bankers and wealthy citizens would like the richest people to have to pay a 'special contribution'."

The letter goes on to say, "When the public finances deficit and the prospects of a worsening state debt threaten the future of France and Europe and when the government is asking everybody for solidarity, it seems necessary for us to contribute." As in - they realize there's not much quality of life in being rich while living in a poor country - a sentiment that most billionaires here in America don't appear to understand.

I guess it IS true - not all billionaires are created equal.

Thom Hartmann: Why did the Virginia nuke plant, built on fault line, have its quake sensors removed?

Thom plus logo

The earth is still shaking along the east coast of the United States - after a 5.8 earthquake rocked the small town of Mineral, Virginia and reverberated through the nation's capitol and several other states up and down the coast - from Georgia to New York. Today - schools and government building are closed in Washington, DC out of fear of after-shocks - and damage has been discovered at the National Cathedral and Washington Monument. It was the largest earthquake to strike Virginia in well over 100 years.

Located near the epicenter is the North Anna Nuclear Power Station - rated the seventh most likely nuclear power plant in America to receive core damage in the event of an earthquake. Due to budget cuts - the quake sensors at the plant were removed back in the 1990's. Luckily - back-up diesel generators kicked in to prevent a meltdown after the plant lost power during the earthquake.

The plant was built to withstand a 6.1 earthquake - yesterday's was a 5.8 - meaning we were that close to suffering a Fukushima-like nuclear disaster near the nation's capital. Let's hope this is a wake-up call.

Donald Trump makes the idiotic case for stealing Libya's oil now that Gadhafi's been toppled...

Thom Hartmann: The truth about tax cuts and outsourcing corporations don't want you to know...

Thom plus logo

America's biggest transnational corporations have a secret they don't want you to know about. Arguing that they'll create jobs in the United States if they just get massive tax breaks - many transnational corporations are refusing to release just how many jobs they have ALREADY created in the United States - and how many jobs they've created overseas - over fears that if the American people saw just how much outsourcing they've been doing - then they'd miss out on their tax breaks.

When it comes time to report hiring to government statisticians - these transnational do so under anonymity - under the promise that only the aggregate amount of job creation numbers will be released - and not job creation on a company-by-company basis. That aggregate number is troubling in itself - between 2000 and 2009 - transnational corporations cut 2.9 million jobs here at home - and hired 2.4 million workers overseas. And since lawmakers can't figure out which company is ACTUALLY creating jobs here in American and which ones aren't - then it's impossible to determine which should get tax cuts.

To make matters worse - the guy heading President Obama's job creation council - GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt - is one of the biggest job outsourcers around with over half of his workforce made up of foreign workers. The real problem here is that our lawmakers for almost two decades have been drinking the so-called Free Trade kool aid - and it's destroying our economy.

Thom Hartmann: "TARP" was just the tip of the iceberg in public funds going to the banksters

Thom plus logo

Homeowners in America are still screwed. As more records from the Federal Reserve go public - we're learning that the 2008 bailout of Wall Street - known as "TARP" - was just the tip of the iceberg in public funds going to the banksters. In December of 2008 - the Fed secretly gave more than $1.2 trillion in virtually interest-free loans to big banks like Morgan Stanley - Citigroup - and Bank of America. That's $1.2 trillion! Coincidentally - that's about how much it would cost to save 6-and-a-half million homeowners who are delinquent on their mortgages and facing foreclosure.

In other words - a clear choice was made in 2008 to help banksters or help bilked homeowners - and the Fed chose the banksters. So today - it's no wonder that banksters are seeing record profits again - while millions of Americans are still being kicked out of their homes. Yet another example of how the banksters in and out of government are taking care of their own. Given the choice between working people's homes or banksters million-dollar penthouses, the Fed chose the Banksters. Meanwhile, George Bush and Congress agreed and threw another $800 billion to the banksters.

Now Obama wants to help working people, and it's time for Republicans to drop their opposition and pass a news jobs and stimulus package ASAP.
