Randi Rhodes: Jobs!

It’s Friday, ya bastids!

The latest jobs report looks great. It’s nice to have good news, and it’s even nicer when it’s bad news for Republicans. In February we gained 222,000 private sector jobs. You can thank Democrats for that. We also lost 30,000 public sector jobs. You can thank Republicans for that. The unemployment rate for February was 8.9 percent. This is the first time in almost two years that the unemployment rate is below 9 percent. That’s a benchmark for both parties. Democrats want unemployment at least that low, and Republicans want it at least that high.

In Wisconsin, Governor Walker’s administration says that there has been $7.5 million in damage to the capitol from the protesters. Wow. I had no idea just how much damage sleeping bags could cause to marble. Of course the Walker administration had no explanation for how they came up with those clean up figures. I’m sure they got them where Scott Walker got all of his other figures—from the Cato Institute.

Dane Country Sheriff Dave Mahoney has been attempting to preserve the peace while protecting the civil rights of demonstrators. It’s hard to do both, especially when the governor doesn’t want to have either done. When asked to keep the public out of the capitol building, Sheriff Mahoney said he “refused to put deputy sheriffs in a position to be palace guards.” Great. Now Governor Walker is going to have to go out and hire some Swiss pikemen.

Fox News this week reported on the Wisconsin protests by claiming that violence was escalating, and showing footage of heated confrontations. Very heated—there were palm trees and everyone was in shirtsleeves. If that footage was from Wisconsin in February, then just forget about the protests… global warming is worse than anybody thought! Hey Fox News, the trick is to be misleading without being thoroughly confusing! At least they managed to use color footage from what appears to be this decade. It would have looked even worse if the footage of the violent crowds was in black and white. “Hey, why are all the signs in French?”
