Randi Rhodes: 101% Chance

At least we’re getting some good news about all the bad news recently. One of Gabrielle Giffords’ doctors says she has a “101 percent chance of surviving.” 101 percent? Wow. That’s more than you would think possible… literally. Rapid medical response kept the tragedy from being worse. Yes, medical response teams in Arizona had to act quickly… before Governor Jan Brewer took their funding away.

In Arizona’s Pima County, in Gabrielle Giffords’ home district, 45 percent of those receiving mental health services were dropped in 2010 due to budget constraints. Hello! Arizona! Could you at least deal with mental health issues rationally, if only to avoid the irony. Not treating people with mental problems actually costs more because of increased suicide attempts, hospitalizations, and incidents requiring police intervention. In short, if we don’t take care of the problems of the mentally ill, they quickly become our problems.

Governor Jan Brewer is reportedly trying to restore Arizona’s reputation. Unfortunately for her, one of the biggest problems with Arizona’s reputation is summed up in the phrase “Governor Jan Brewer.” Arizona has an image problem? How did that happen? Somebody ask Governor Brewer after she’s done insisting that the deserts of Arizona are full of decapitated bodies. I guess Jan Brewer plans to improve Arizona’s image in between signing a bill to allow guns in bars, and a bill to allow guns on school campuses.

Sad & Predictable Department: After the shootings in Arizona, there has been a huge surge in sales of the Glock semi-automatic pistol the killer used. Despite any evidence, gun buyers were afraid that Glock pistol could be banned. But then gun buyers are always afraid of something. I think that’s why they’re gun buyers. An Arizona gun storeowner explained the surge in Glock sales by saying “It’s in the news now. I’m sure the Green Bay Packers are selling all kinds of jerseys today as well.” Uh, yeah. But I don’t think any of those Green Bay Packers jerseys are going to end up killing anyone.
